WASTOX® - Oxygen lancing for greater combustion efficiency and reduced emissions

“WASTOX® is an extremely efficient, cost effective way for us to maintain tight control over emissions and keep our plants up and running. Not only does this benefit the environment, it also makes for a safer, healthier work environment for our furnace operators.”

Jo van Hinsberg, Managing Director, AMAG, Austria

Turning unwanted contaminants of cheap scrap into valuable fuel

Maximum combustion efficiency tests have shown that combustibles react more efficiently with a pure oxygen stream than with an oxygen-enriched flame. With an oxygen lance, combustion when recycling used beverage cans was almost complete with emission levels dropping below 0.01%. An oxygen-enriched oxyfuel flame reduced these emissions to 1%. With an airfuel burner, 20-50 % of the carbon on the processed scrap was emitted as volatile organic compounds (VOC).

Benefits of WASTOX® oxygen lancing

* Possibility to use contaminated, low grade scrap
* Control and reduction of emissions
* Lower energy consumption
* Simple installation and operation in any furnace

With over ten years’ experience in the development and implementation of oxygen lancing, Linde is the undisputed innovation leader. This patented and versatile system is successfully deployed by many customers around the globe for both: single and double-pass installations in rotary salt and tiltable rotary furnaces.

WASTOX
® at AMAG, Austria

AMAG produces ingots for the foundry industry from its two parallel, fixed-axis rotary salt furnaces. To meet strict statutory requirements on emission levels, AMAG installed WASTOX® at both of its rotary furnaces. The oxyfuel burners are located at the charging door and the WASTOX® lances at the flue-gas opening. WASTOX® has given AMAG a cost-effective way of meeting emission regulations without having to relocate or install an expensive post-combustion system.

AMAG can melt scrap with higher levels of contamination without impacting on the quality of the final product or exceeding VOC limits (50 mg/m3 on average per half hour). If VOC levels are rising, the operator simply starts the WASTOX® lance and adapts the oxygen flow to the VOC, turning it off when levels have dropped again.

The WASTOX® lance is combined with a base supply of excess oxygen through the oxyfuel burner.
