| Using a cryogenic refrigerant to form ice plugs enables sections of pipe to be completely sealed for maintenance or repair.
The process involves clamping an insulated jacket around the pipework in question and filling it with liquid nitrogen (LIN) or carbon dioxide (CO2) to reduce the temperature of the pipe contents until an ice plug forms.
Typical pipe diameters generally range up to 300 mm (12“), but ice plugs in 800 mm pipes are also possible. Nitrogen consumption varies according to application, but a vast range of empirical values are available.
